Too often Native American cultures are treated as a monolith and viewed from a colonist's perspective. To counter the shallow, misleading stereotypes and cultural appropriation, the author gathered information about spiritual traditions from each nation's community to help readers appreciate these rich and complex cultures. The first chapter provides an overview of pan-Indigenous cultural property of oral traditions and traditional knowledge, such as mythic time and relationship to nature. Then, sample spiritualism practices are discussed, one chapter each, for eight indigenous nations: Lenape, Haudenosaunee, Navajo, Cherokee, Chinook, Chippewa, Sioux, and Chumash. Topics include homelands and history, ceremonies and special events, supernatural beings, housing, games, special numbers, art forms, and value systems. A few color images dot the chapters. A short resource list and (forthcoming) index complete the volume. Arroyo tries hard to be culturally sensitive and humble about collecting and conveying these traditions, hoping that readers will broaden their own frame of reference. To that end, several self-reflection sections mark the text. A valuable addition to religion-reference collections.
