This classic sci-fi epic from 1971 deals with three different species at three differing levels of evolution--two space-faring and one farther down the evolutionary ladder. They come into conflict on the least technologically developed world among the three. Elana, the heroine, is a student on her father's anthropological service ship. She is beautifully voiced by Jennifer Ikeda as she wrestles with mighty moral dilemmas, inviting us to compare and contrast what is going on among these differing cultures with what we find in our world. All the characters except Elana are males, and Ikeda portrays them adequately. This Newbery Honor Book will be loved by sci-fi devotees from teens to adults. M.C. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine
